About

Philippe Cam became involved with music in the early 1990s as a DJ in Brussels, Belgium.

After spending some time as a sailor in Port of Le Havre in Normandy, France, he returned to Brussels at some point during the mid-1990s to study music. While writing music for theatre, ballet productions and film, his compositions began to turn out different from this work, and he looked for a home for his new music. Philippe began then to release on Traum Schallplatten.

Philippe Cam first worked as a sailor and later as a docker at Port of Le Havre in Normandy, France. He then turned to experimental rock music production before attending a concert by composer Bernard Parmegiani, which sparked his interest in electronic music. In the early 1990s he appeared as a DJ at the club Sud in Brussels. He has also composed music for film, theatre and contemporary dance. For the choreographer Pierre Droulers, he composed the music for his pieces De l’Air et du Vent (1996) and Multum In Parvo (1998).

Cam always creates rhythmic tracks without the use of beats, but uses slow modulation/filtering to create a genuine and authentic sound. His unforgettable performance in Cologne’s Artheatre at the Popkomm 2000 at the Traum Schallplatten showcase, together with WMF club/De:Bug magazine wrote history.

Around 1999, he turned more and more towards techno. From 2000, Cam released several singles on Riley Reinhold’s Traum Schallplatten label, that stood out particularly for their lush and hypnotic melodies.

In 2001, these singles were eventually combined onto a Balance compilation album and released on Traum Schallplatten. After a parent’s death and the birth of his 1st child, Cam withdrew from production work.

In 2006, Canadian label Musique Risqué released the single Somewhere Between Here and There, that also contained remixes from Akufen and Deadbeat. After that, he did not release any new material until 2019 with the album Rotterdam.

Cam lives in Nîmes in the south of France, where he continues to live quietly out of the public eye.
