About

International DJ, innovative producer, founder of Superfreq, Plink Plonk, End Recordings. The Shamen group frontman and vocalist, and co-owner of The End nightclub, in London in 1995, Mr.C emerged as a pioneering force in the house music scene in 1987, and has continued to be instrumental throughout the industry.

Early roots in the 1980s

Richard West (also known as Mr.C) was born in London, in the late 1960s. He started MC’ing in London clubs, aged 16, and soon earned a reputation as a fast-talking vivacious rapper, working with LWR Radio’s Ron Tom, Jasper the Vinyl Junkie, and Jazzy M.

The Shamen group mid-1980s

Mr.C is best known as frontman, songwriter and producer, of the pop group The Shamen, who notched-up a string of top-10 hits, including Move Any Mountain, Love Sex Intelligence, Boss Drum, Phorever People, and the U.K. number 1 smash hit Ebeneezer Goode (1992), that were hits all over the world. The Shamen album Boss Drum (1992), went double platinum in the U.K., and they also won a highly coveted Ivor Novelo for Songwriters of the Year, in the U.K. in 1993.

Late 1980s work (house and techno beginnings)

Mr.C then hooked-up with Colin Faver and ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards, to became resident rapper at the legendary Camden Palace in London, going on to MC for Colin Faver on the then, illegal pirate radio station, Kiss FM. Mr.C went into the studio to record his 1st house track, with ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards, as Myster-E, that was released in August 1987. This inspired Mr.C to become a DJ, to learn more about his beloved house and techno music, and in September 1987 Richard took to the decks.

Opening of The End nightclub and venue management, in the mid-1990s

In December 1995, Mr.C opened with co-business partner Layo Paskin, of Layo & Bushwacka!, the legendary nightclub The End in London (Bloomsbury), then AKA Bar 3 years later, that celebrated its 13th anniversary in December 2008, and was lauded as 1 of the best nightclubs in the world. It completely changed the face of clubbing in London and beyond. Tech house pioneering in the 2000s

Alongside Terry Francis in the early 1990s, started playing and mixing house and techno records, and released a tape cassette with ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards, with house written on 1 side, and techno written on the other side. Signalling the beginnings of tech house, the tech house wave, and more specifically London tech house, that gained huge momentum from about 1998–2008, in the U.K. and worldwide. Terry Francis, Mr.C and ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards are co-pilots on an ongoing 30+ year journey. ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards is even Mr.C’s mentor.

Mr.C is founder and owner of Plink Plonk Records, co-founder of End Recordings, and founder and co-owner of the Superfreq label, that is now releasing music prolifically.

DJ residencies 1988–present day

Mr.C has since organised, promoted and been resident DJ at: Fantasy (1988), Base (Dungeons 1989), Release (1991), Harmony (1992), Drop (1993), Cyclone (1994), Vapourspace (1994 and 1995), Flavour (at the The End 1995 and 1996), Subterrain (at the The End 1995–2002), Superfreq (worldwide 2002–present), and Super Disco Freq (Los Angeles 2010–present).

Mr.C was also a resident DJ, every weekend (on Friday and Saturday nights), at the legendary RIP parties at Clink Street in London, throughout 1988. It was here that rave culture as we know it, was truly born, inspiring all London raves, that were to follow in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Mr.C held down a weekly radio show called Future Music with Kiss 100 FM in London, from 1993–2002, and has presented TV shows for MTV, FH1, VIVA and the BBC.

Aliases and group work

Mr.C has recorded under the names, Myster-E, Unity 2, Nu Jacks, Bass Bureau, The Shamen, Mantrac, Somnambulist, Animus Amour, Killer Loop, Mr.C & Tom Parris, Mr.C & 16B, Sycophant Slags, Indigo Kidz, and East LA Tek.

Has also done collaborations as the Indigo Kidz (with Affie Yusuf), with Noel Jackson (as East LA Tek), and has had recent releases on Poker Flat, Get Physical Records, and Adjunct Audio, as well as his own Superfreq imprint.

Mid-2010s

Ran and promoted Superfreq events, that are celebrating being 16 years old in March 2018, that ran monthly at The End, until it closed down in January 2009. Superfreq now functions bi-monthly in London, hopping around London’s popup warehouse venues, and various clubs, including The Steelyard after an extremely successful event, with Richie Hawtin on December 2015. Regular events at Fabric nightclub, and regular quarterly events at Red Gallery (until its closure in July 2018). Superfreq does regular events in Los Angeles, as well as bi-monthly events in Calais, France, and annual events in Brooklyn, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Miami, Dallas, Denver and Washington D.C. in the United States. Also Vancouver, Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Moscow, Ibiza, Bogota, Montañita, and other 1-off annual events all over the world.

Recently completed a tour of Asia, hitting Manila, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Beijing and Shenzhen. Superfreq has accomplished 7 successful seasons in Ibiza, 3 at Club Underground, 2 at the legendary DC10, 1 season at Blu, 3 events at Aura, and hosted annual events at the BPM Festival in Playa del Carmen.

Incidents album in 2017

Mr.C did a world tour for his Incidents album (2017), that was released on vinyl and CD, on his Superfreq imprint in June 2017, with the singles Stand Up, Ripple Effect and Shape Your Dreams. Containing superb remixes from renowned artists. Mr.C’s brand new single Show Me has remixes by Ruede Hagelstein and Radio Rental.

Moves across the world between 2010–2023

Moved to Los Angeles around 2010 for a new era, and is now back once again, in his home city of London, U.K. as of 2023.

Music festival founding and running

Procured the Next Step Forward Festival, to be held in various London clubs, in 2018. This brand new boutique club festival, includes showcases by Superfreq, Class of 88, Spilt Milk, Dirty Laundry, Dodo Club, Breakfast Club, and Misfit. Includes a line-up of 38 acts including Mr.C, ‘Evil’ Eddie Richards, Bushwacka!, Saytek Live, Jay Tripwire, Silverlining, Roel Funcken, Steven Rutter and many more.

Retrospective works

Currently celebrating 30 years as a professional DJ, with a collection of past solo works. That is out now on Superfreq, and is called 30 Years of Mischief, featuring previously unreleased digital music, from his former labels Plink Plonk and End Recordings, as well as Wagon Repair and Superfreq. Mr.C is currently doing shows celebrating this milestone, with 30th anniversary events around the globe.

Social media presence, and outreach work

His presence and Bushwacka!’s on Facebook, and other social media platforms, is a lifeline for people all over the world, that is humorous, direct, and makes people’s day much better, discussing news issues, of the day and week. His fans actively comment, debate and interact in their 10,000s. Regularly does spoken podcasts and interviews, and does not hold back on what he sees, feels and believes. Also contemplates a conference to discuss, explore and study the greatness of past house and techno.

2024+

1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s, 2030s, 3040s?, Mr.C is currently on his 38th year of mischief, although is strictly tammed by Miss C. The humane acidic-tinged gladiator, that continues to tackle impossibilities. The rebel, with a Herculean cause… A gem in her Her Majesty’s jewels.
