About

Everyone’s favourite French deep house producer, Yann Fontaine has been knocking out some top gear of late on labels like Ovum Recordings, Serial Records and Elevation, to his latest on New York’s Square Room Records.

What a young Frenchman from somewhere called Mont-Saint-Aignan is doing posing as the next Joe Claussell is beyond me. But he is doing it in style. Back mixes warm, liquid jazz with Carl Craig synths and African drums. Appearances ups the tempo, with a Kevin Yost bassline and more atmospheric synth waves.

With The Yann Fontaine Project Volume 3.0: Un Autre Essai EP, he manages to be deep-as-you-like on the 1st track, and Brazilian on the next one. On his debut release on Groovecentral Recordings he, non-surprisingly, manages to be both!

French by birth, but not by nature, he does not use disco loops in his productions, Yann Fontaine is a future house music star. Originally a member of mid-1990s band Arborific, Fontaine lives in the secluded Mont-Saint-Aignan 130 kilometres from the hustle and bustle of Paris, and holds down a day job. However, when he finds the time to get creative, he makes deep spiritual house, tech-house as well as a dash of soulful down tempo music heavily influenced by MAW Records and Carl Craig in equal measures. Fontaine records under his own name and has released material on the Expanded Soul, Brique Rouge, Groovecentral Recordings and Slip ‘N’ Slide Blue labels.

As Yann likes to put it ‘I have always loved some words or sentences that sounds like deep strings or harmonies to me. The word “feels” is 1 of these due to its short and sweet phonetics… but most of all because of its sense. Enjoy!’.

Question: how long have you been making music for, and how long do you think it has taken for you to become established in the global world of house music?

I have been making music since 1993. I learned violin and drums at music school between the ages of 6 and 14. The drums are essential, but not the violin! I would love to learn how to play keyboards. Do you really think I have established myself in the global world of house music? If so, then I am honored.
