About

Warmdesk is the project of the Texan born producer William Selman. After a period in Vienna (Austria), Selman relocated to Chicago (United States).

Named after an obscure single by an early 1990s group, out of Cologne (Germany), that inspired him initially. His sound evolved from his earliest work of musique concrete (concrete abstract music), and skewed rhythms, into combining these elements into stripped-down minimal techno and deep minimal. Still present are the dubby textures and samples from everyday life, but now they coexist with smooth chords and rhythmic grooves. Epitonic (a digital source for independent music) says ‘Warmdesk’s compositions are without a doubt, experimental and abstract, but their rhythms generally remain intact and apparent. They are a welcome change from the many Autechre clones, that now clutter the electronic music landscape. Rather than focusing on scattered and irregular beat patterns, Warmdesk crafts modern musique concrete (concrete abstract music) compositions, full of fascinating and complex individual sounds’.

The sonic palette is fairly limited, but Warmdesk’s keen sense of melody, makes the album work for those interested in the technique that produced it, and anyone who appreciates well-done minimal tech house’.

Selman has released material on many labels, including A Touch of Class, Deluxe, Bip-hop Generation, Static Caravan and Fällt. His 1st album was Guero Variations, for the well-regarded Deluxe label (home to Electric Birds, Blectum From Blechdom, and Matmos’s early endeavours). The record brought together the musique concrete (concrete abstract music) and techno, as it is composed almost completely with sounds from the interior of the piano. According to the Dave Segal at the Portland Mercury it ‘makes musique concrete (concrete abstract music) detritus [waste or debris of any kind] shimmy and shake with glee’. The album made it into several critics top lists, for records in 2003.

More recently, he has released 2 12″ on Andy Vaz’s Background Records, A Touch Of Class deep house sublabel, that showed off more dancefloor-friendly cuts (while retaining the sampling aesthetic) of Selman, that quickly found their way into top 10s of DJs like Steve Bug and Mathias Schaffhäuser, as well as receiving the highest accolades from critics.

Also runs A Posteriori Recordings, that releases occasional 1-off records, of a more conceptual theme.

From 2014, Selman has begun releasing process-oriented, freeform experimental music on tape cassette and vinyl, and also doing longer length mixes and podcasts.

During the day, Selman is a software and database engineer.
