About

For those familiar with the netlabel scene, Paul Keely is a man who needs no introduction. Paul Keeley is a Canadian DJ and producer. He has been releasing since 2002 in a production career that has encompassed ambient, minimal techno, house and progressive trance. More recently he has been releasing regularly on the Anjunadeep record label.

Paul Keeley’s 1st releases came under his production alias Gyges in 2002. His productions and mix compilations as Gyges encompassed ambient and minimal techno.

Paul Keeley began writing his particular style of house music after living in Montreal, Quebec for a year-and-a-half, and being influenced by performances by Luomo and Akufen, as well as the always-inspiring Mutek festival held there every spring. A lifelong musician, Paul has also created music of varying styles under different aliases, including electro-infused IDM (as Silent Q), and chaotic textural atmospherics (as Gyges). Currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Paul continues to evolve his house music style, combining dub-inspired synthesizers, deep percussion grooves, and glitchy vocal snippets of various origins. Look for Paul’s upcoming 12″ release on the Irish-based Psychonavigation Records/Offshoot Records, as well as his web release on Panospria Records under his Gyges alias.

He started releasing as Paul Keeley in 2004, and split most of his work between 2 internet-only (net) labels Thinner and Epsilonlab, with his Epsilonlab releases more dancefloor focused, and his Thinner releases more mellow.

In 2007 Keeley released his 1st original artist album Blunt Etiquette out on Epsilonlab.

Towards the end of the noughties Keeley’s profile accelerated, following the release of a number of tracks on the Anjunadeep label, particularly Life Aquatic/Doormatica in 2009. Up to this point, Keeley’s production style had meandered through house, techno and ambient. His Anjunadeep releases saw more of a progressive trance edge creep in, though always married with a strong house feel.

By the release of Disco Belle in 2010, Keeley had started cautious step towards mainstream electro house, albeit from a leftfield perspective, with Balearic pianos fending off a mangled electro disco bass-line.

Paul Keeley’s production career has been a slow burn, but has also embraced a diverse range of musical styles. Always on the more experimental edges of electronic music, Keeley has pursued a principled and intelligent approach, that has resulted in high quality productions.
