About

The main member is the producer and artist Gerald Donald, also ½ half of the band Drexciya (with James Stinson). Other memebers are Kim Karli, Michaela To-Nhan Bertel and William Scott.

Dopplereffekt are 1 of the strangest and most mysterious electronic groups. They hide behind strange German pseudonyms whereas the track titles and lyrics are in English, and made-up of a mixture of scientific, red light and political allusions. They have developed their own highly influential sound aesthetic, that has contributed to the current electro scene massively. Their countless German references reflect the group’s fascination, with classic early Kraftwerk sound. Their emphasis is on precise drum programming, and effects with tones of 1982 classic electric-funk days.

Started in 1995 with the EP for Detroit’s Dataphysix label, then in 1997, 2 more EPs for the label Infophysix and Sterilization.

Their alias Japanese Telecom emerged in 1999, with the release of the Rising Sun EP, through Intuit-Solar Records. DJ Hell contacted Dopplereffekt, who then released the album Gesamtkunstwerk in 1999, that has been their best-known album, featuring a collection of tracks such as Fascist State and Infophysix.

In 2003, they released Linear Accelerator on International Deejay Gigolo Records, that was a big departure from their earlier sound. Featuring very little beat-oriented tracks and a focus on particle physics.

In 2007, Dopplereffekt released the Calabi Yau Space album on Rephlex.

They have played live gigs regularly across the globe since 2007, using 2 Korg Triton analog workstations, with their most productive stretch between 2011–2023.
